INS AND OUTS OF GETTING AROUND SAINT LOUIS

Getting around St. Louis can be a bit tricky for someone who has just relocated to Missouri’s largest city. However, if you are armed with all the facts about the ins and outs of getting around, then it can be a far less intimidating task.

First of all, if you choose to commute to work, there are several interstate highways to get you there. I-70, for instance, comes in from Illinois before heading west towards Kansas City. I-64 goes east to Louisville, Kentucky while I-44 takes you southwest to Tulsa, Oklahoma. I-55 heads north to Chicago or south to Memphis. I-270 hooks up with I-255 to make a complete loop around the metro St. Louis area while intersecting with I-70, I-64/Highway 40, I-44 and I-55 along the way (see city map on page 26).

While it may be difficult to give up hitting the road in your own vehicle, more and more commuters and businesses are looking for alternative ways of commuting. In St. Louis, the choice for a number of residents is the MetroLink and MetroBus systems.

The MetroLink is St. Louis’ light-rail line, featuring 37 stations throughout the metropolitan area.

With gas prices on the rise and construction on Highway 40 causing traffic headaches, the MetroLink offers an easy, affordable alternative to driving.

The system’s 40-plus miles of track connect stations from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport to Scott Air Force Base in Shiloh, Ill. Its secondary branch, which opened in 2006, extends to Shrewsbury, Mo. The network provides St. Louisans easy access to work, shopping, recreation and more.

MetroLink’s “proof of payment” system requires riders to validate tickets before boarding trains. One-ride, two-hour and one-day tickets are available, as well as weekly, monthly and special event passes.
