Outstanding theatres, museums and a myriad of exciting activities provide endless opportunities for entertainment throughout the St. Louis Metro area. Let our list of favorites show you all the city has to offer by guiding you through some of its most popular attractions.
THEATRES
The Fabulous Fox Theatre
St. Louisans don’t have to go to New York for the best of Broadway. Millions of people have visited the Fabulous Fox Theatre since its opening in 1929.
Since its revitalization in 1982, the Fox has presented touring Broadway shows, and family and gospel shows; top pop, rock and comedy concert acts; and country superstars, dance and classic movies.
“The Fox Theatre prides itself on providing St. Louis audiences with the best of Broadway and something for everyone every year,” says Erin Bruns, Public Relations Coordinator at the Fox.
Greeted by several pairs of golden doors that line a portion of the sidewalk along North Grand Avenue, guests leave the hustle and bustle of the city and enter into the Siamese-Byzantine style palace that has graced downtown St. Louis since 1929. And if you notice the trunks of the elephants intricately detailed throughout the red carpet, they point the way toward the stage – the premier stage in St. Louis for Broadway productions.
William Fox, the movie mogul of his time, constructed this palace of entertainment in the late 1920s – a $6 million endeavor that never fully recovered from the stock market crash just months after opening night. Sadly, in 1978, the doors closed. But thanks to the Strauss family and associates, three years and $3 million later, the Fabulous Fox was reborn.
Its main lobby sparkles with red faux marble columns that dwarf the human figure and support the eight-story original 1929 ceiling, and its staircase imitates an East Indian Burial Temple.
As you wind your way from the main lobby, up spiral staircases and through canopied entryways that lead to the vast auditorium, the beauty at the end of the tunnel is simply breathtaking. Mythical sea creatures line the mezzanine and balcony rails; high above, a 2,000-pound chandelier, 12 feet in diameter, is suspended from a 116-foot ceiling; and 4,400 plush velvet seats create a sea of red, inviting guests to bask in the grandeur of the magnificent space.
The 2009 – 2010 season features productions such as the 2008 Tony Award-winning musical, “In the Heights;” the new Mel Brooks musical, “Young Frankenstein;” “Grease” starring American Idol winner Taylor Hicks, and the Broadway sensation, “Wicked.” For more information, call the Fox at (314) 534-1678, visit www.fabulousfox.com, or go to www.metrotix.com to purchase tickets.
